The Bevins Specials - “If I Had A Hammer” (1971)

I found a stash of Nashboro Records 45s at my old place of work and this is one of the A-sides from said stash. Though the roster of Nashboro (out of Nashville, obv.) is technically all “gospel” it actually ranges from traditional gospel, blues, soul, and r&b and intermixes it all. They had a few offshoots like Nasco, Crescent & Mankind Records and they reached more into secular music. I’m always looking for that center label and even if I’ve never heard the artist, I’ll usually give it a whirl anyway.

And the 4th vocalist who has a solo…whoa, that shit is insane.

B-side will come later today if people seem to like this one enough.

Luther Allison - “Raggedy And Dirty” (Bad News Is Coming, 1972)

Funky blues or bluesy funk? Motown wouldn’t disappoint either way you slice it.

The Band - “Mystery Train” (Moondog Matinee, 1973)

Otis Redding - I Can’t Turn You Loose

This live version ratchets up the tempo until no booty can resist shaking. The theme to this song was employed as the Blues Brother’s theme. The crowd is loving it, and who can blame them with that voice, gosh darn dang, it’s the heart of soul.

Jeff Beck Group - “Spanish Boots” (Beck-Ola, 1969)

Heavy as shit. Especially for ‘69.

Jeff Beck Group - “All Shook Up” (Beck-Ola, 1969)

Sounds like Allman Brothers are jamming with Zeppelin at times. Diggin’ it.

The White Stripes - “Little Bird” (Live @ The Gold Dollar, 1999)

Bobby Bland - “Don’t Cry No More” (1961)
