Martha & The Vandellas - “Tear It On Down” (Black Magic, 1972)

Their final album for Motown and ever, features covers of The Beatles (used on a previous album), Marvin Gaye, and Jackson 5. It even has production and writing by Ashford & Simpson. Albeit overlooked at the time of release, it has songs that people really need to hear so they don’t always think of “Heat Wave” when someone mentions the Vandellas.

Marvin Gaye - “Time To Get It Together” (Here, My Dear, 1978)

As heard in Madlib’s “Episode XVI”.

Marvin Gaye - “Got To Give It Up” (Live @ Montreux, 1980)

Favorite comment on youtube: “every woman that watches this gets pregnant.”

Also amazing, The Dirtbombs cover.

Yvonne Fair - “Funky Music Sho’ Nuff Turns Me On” (The Bitch Is Back, 1975)

Produced by the great Norman Whitfield, she reminds me of a mixture of Tina Turner and Betty Wright. Fair was a former member of the Chantels and did some work with James Brown before signing to Motown. Supposedly Marvin Gaye sings backup uncredited?

Marvin Gaye - “Medley: Inner City Blues, God Is Love, What’s Going On, Save The Children” (Live @ London Palladium, 1977)

Marvin Gaye - “Your Unchanging Love” (Moods Of Marvin Gaye, 1966)

Sounds kinda similar to “How Sweet It Is” but I think this one is better…probably from the fact that I haven’t heard it a million times.

J Dilla - “Marvin & The Fam”

Sample of Marvin Gaye’s “God Is Love” and instrumental to Common’s “Love Is…”

Marvin Gaye - “God Is Love” (What’s Going On, 1971)

Next: J Dilla’s use of the song.
